If you type “running belt” into Google, you are faced with thousands of brands, thousands of models, and thousands of features. Amazon.com shows over 42,000 different models! Yet, choosing a good runners belt is just as important as good running shoes. Where do you start in the hunt for an ideal belt?
Here are 5 pointers for choosing a running belt:
1.The Right Fit
The ideal position for your running belt is with the pouch at the front, positioned low at the widest part of your hips. If the belt has a stretchable elastic band, it can be adjusted for a comfortable and snug fit. Silicone grippers on the inside of the belt can prevent the belt from bouncing. If the belt is ergonomically designed, it shouldn’t cause chafing. A good belt will have an even weight distribution and minimally interfere with your running.
Hydration Capabilities
By having enough fluids to drink while exercising, you will reduce your chances of fatigue, heat stroke, and dehydration. There are 3 types of water bottle belts:
A fully loaded sports belt with 1 or 2 (12 or 16 oz.) bottles
A simple water pouch with just 1 bottle
A sports belt incorporating a holster for your own bottle (up to 20 oz.).
Whichever you choose, make sure that the bottles are easy to use single-handed and come with a quick-flow spout and silicone mouthpiece. Sliding the bottle in and out of the holsters should be smooth so that you are not slowed down or splashed on your runs.
Your Phone Size and Use
No run would be complete without a smart-phone on hand for music and fitness apps. Here you have a choice between a phone armband, a belt with an enlarged pouch for your phone, or an add-on phone pouch. Wearing the phone on your arm with a clear touchscreen window allows you to use the phone without having to undo any zippers, Velcro tabs, or flaps. If you feel like the armband is weighing you down, go for a belt with a zipped pouch.
It goes without saying that the pouch should be big enough to contain a “plus-sized” phone. You might also want to consider what type of earphones you will use. Do you need ear bud ports or are you using Bluetooth headsets?
The Right Type of Material
It’s important to check which materials are used since some are more effective at regulating heat and preventing sweat entering the pouch. Neoprene fabric is lightweight, elastic, and less bulky than other options.
If you are running in rainy conditions, the fabric needs to be water-resistant to protect your valuables. Unfortunately, belts that use zippers or have stitching cannot be 100% water-proof and should not be submerged.
5.The Added Extras
Some running belts are incorporated with added extras. Others allow you to customize them to your own personal needs. These factors should be taken into consideration:
Reflective accents for high visibility
Integrated bib toggles for racing
Energy gel loops
Sunglasses pouch
Separate case or add-on for your phone
Bottle holster add-on
Interior pocket for ID, cash, and credit cards
Luminous color options
At the end of the day, let your comfort be the judge. A running belt that lets you move freely with confidence can really improve your running experience.
